Written by Josh Johnston and longstanding collaborator Doug Kinch, Southern Song is a tender tale of the exhilaration and strains of love seen through the eyes of a young man waiting for a train that carries his sweetheart. She has decided to make the leap to live in his hometown rather than have a long-distance relationship. Nerves, excitement, uncertainty, love all mixed together in one moment. Accompanied by guitarists Jack Maher (Declan O’Rourke, Sharon Shannon) and Tom Portman, the song is lifted by the string arrangement and clarinet playing of Marco Francescangeli.
The track will be the opening cut to Josh Johnston's forthcoming CD album Reasons To Fly.

You've never been down my street before,
You never wound up outside my door,
Way back home has always been my thing,
Your City Lights ain't the song I sing,
Compass points never hold you down,
You took a reading on my hometown,
I was waiting for your word of mouth,
You blew hot and cold, Now you're heading south,
Southern Song,
You've come to hear a southern song,
City station in the morning sun,
Old Grey Northern's making platform one,
No destination, no turning back,
Sleepers wake while I'm here on track,
I don't know if you'll think I lied,
Or if you'll chill under southern skies,
I've got you and we'll be ok,
The needle spins and it points the way,
Southern Song,
You've come to hear your southern song,
Can't wait to hear your southern song,
